An independent election watchdog group called Project Vote Smart states unequivocally that Steve Israel intentionally cheated and deceived voters during his re-election bid against challenger John Gomez . Project Vote Smart is wholly non-partisan as evidenced by some of its founding members who include, Jimmy Carter, George McGovern, Michael Dukakis, and Geraldine Ferraro.
Israel, in an effort to retain power, scared senior citizens by intentionally misrepresenting his challenger's position on Social Security.
A letter released by Project Vote Smart on September 27, 2010 states that Steve Israel used information to attack his opponent which Israel knew to be false, intentionally deceived voters, and cheated the public out of "their need for trusted, abundant, accurate information."
Steve Israel was also called out by Project Vote Smart for using their name to lend credibility to these false attacks, something each politician knows is prohibited by their written policy.
According to Project Vote Smart, Israel's type of inappropriate behavior occurs in less than 00.05% political races nationwide.
Steve Israel never addressed, or apologized for, or retracted any of his intentional misrepresentations. In fact, he refused to even answer where he stands on various issues for Project Vote Smart, which asks all candidates their positions so as to inform voters in a non-partisan way prior to their voting.
SIW does not give Steve Israel a "pass" on this one. This type of activity is not representing the 2nd District well, and does not help the voters in his district make a free, fair and informed decision.
